State Service Project

California DECA is excited to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as its State Service Project for 2011 – 2013. By partnering with such a great organization, California DECA can help grant wishes to children all over our state.

About Make-A-Wish
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

The first wish was granted in 1980 to 7-year-old Chris Greicius. Chris was being treated for leukemia yet every day dreamed of becoming a police officer. His wish was granted just two days before he passed. Seeing Chris Greicus’ dream come true is what inspired the Make-A-Wish Foundation to become the largest wish-granting organization in the world. Read more about Chris’ story at http://www.wish.org/about/the_first_wish

Today over 215,000 wishes have been granted, granting a wish every 40 minutes.

California DECA’s Partnership
Voting delegates at the 2011 State Career Development Conference selected the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the official state service project for two years, until 2013. By selecting a service partner for two years, local chapters can build a framework for success and increase its network and support for the organization.

Local DECA chapters are encouraged to host local service projects benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. DECA chapters can chose which Make-A-Wish chapter to contribute its fund to; ensuring money raised by DECA members can stay local and benefit their local community.  The top local DECA chapters raising the most money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation will be recognized on stage at the State Career Development Conference.

During statewide events California DECA will also work to raise funds for the organization. All funds raised at California DECA events will go to support one location. For the 2011-2012 year the funds will go to the Orange County & Inland Empire chapter of Make-A-Wish (site of SCDC 2012). For the 2012-2013 the funds will go to the Greater Bay Area chapter of Make-A-Wish (site of SCDC 2013). By contributing all funds raised statewide to one chapter California DECA’s contribution can make the biggest impact.

How will California DECA raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation?

  • Nor Cal’s Got Talent held at Nor Cal Career Development Conference in January
  • So Cal’s Got Talent held at So Cal Career Development Conference in January
  • Formal Dance at State Career Development Conference in February (donations)

California DECA encourages all our chapters to help grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Help make dreams come true!
