Foothill & Amador Valley DECA Participate in Piper Jaffray's "Taking Stock With Teens" Program

Pleasanton, California—September 12, 2014—Foothill and Amador Valley DECA proudly hosted a guest speaker, Maria Vizuete, from Piper Jaffray Investment Research on Thursday, September 11, and Friday, September 12, during the Marketing and Economics of Business periods.
Foothill and Amador Valley DECA were privileged to participate in a program called “Taking Stock With Teens”. Piper Jaffray’s Senior Research Analyst, Jeff Klinefelter, started this project over 11 years ago, speaking to teens at schools across the US. Taking Stock With Teens is a wide-scale market research project that focuses on the brand preferences, spending patterns, and purchasing behaviors of the US teen population.
The research focuses on the consumer sector, analyzing stocks and companies such as Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Target, Kohl’s, and Michael Kors. More than 28 million teens in the US spend roughly $27 billion every year on fashion-related purchases, including apparel, accessories, and footwear. Taking Stock With Teens believes that the teen population and its impact on the economy are important to understand.
A research analyst spoke to the students about careers, and how they incorporate macroeconomic and industry analysis in their company-specific research. In addition, Maria Vizuete spoke about basic principles of marketing, including the product life cycle, brand positioning, and celebrity endorsements.
Piper Jaffray’s business partnership with DECA has been beneficial to both sides and is vital to the success of DECA and Career Technical Education programs around the country.
