4 Tips for Gaining an EDGE at ICDC

Author:

With the 2015 International Career Development Conference only moments away, many of you may be feeling the butterflies fluttering in your stomach as you prepare for the big event in Orlando, Florida. Perfecting the execution of your presentation for the big competition may seem like an impossible task, but with these tips, you’ll be sure to have an EDGE when it’s your time to shine!
EXPLORE
Each and every individual has a different presentation style, so why not find your own? In Orlando, you will be competing with hundreds for a spot on the ICDC stage, but don’t let the numbers discourage you. Explore your strengths, and focus on what sets you apart from other competitors. There is more than one way to leave a lasting impression on your judge, and it’s up to you to find what style works best!
DEVELOP
Once you have a clear idea of where your strengths lie, work on developing your weaknesses. Practice presenting in front of someone you trust, and listen to constructive criticism to pinpoint where you can improve. There’s always room to learn and develop something more, and doing so will make a big difference when you present to your judge.
GEAR
When you are presenting to your judge, remember that you are taking on a particular role when doing so. Put yourself into those shoes, and gear what you say to match the prompt or scenario you are given. Most importantly, believe it. There is nothing more convincing than watching a presentation given by an individual who trusts in what he or she is saying. Believe in what you say, and your judge will too.
ENGAGE
Don’t be afraid of your judge! Be sure to keep your judge engaged by maintaining steady eye contact and smiling as much as you can. Keeping the mood professional but friendly will help to hold your judge’s interest. Most of all, be yourself! Letting your own personality shine through will make you stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Keeping these tips in mind will be sure to help you when you present in Orlando! You’ve made it this far – be proud of what you’ve accomplished, and don’t be afraid to open your eyes to new possibilities. Believe in yourself, and your abilities will carry you through!
