Amador Valley DECA Hosts Annual Mini-Conference

Amador Valley DECA takes pride in hosting a mini-conference for its members every year in order to better prepare them for competition and future careers. This year, the chapter’s mini-conference took place on January 23 from 3:30 to 9 PM and boasted nearly 90 attendees from nearby Foothill, Dougherty Valley, and Castro Valley High Schools.
The mini-conference was geared towards the Amador Valley Business Academy members, or non-competing students not enrolled in CTE courses, as well as younger DECA members to give them the competitive edge at future conferences. These competitors participated in either Principles of Marketing, Quick Serve Restaurant Management, or Business Law and Ethics Team Decision Making and attended an instructional workshop hosted by DECA officers Rida Lasne, Mihir Weling, Rithvik Sunku, and Won Bin Lee. The competition simulated the experience of a true DECA conference by having experienced DECA members serve as judges.
After competition, the conference attendees feasted on a sandwich dinner and listened to a keynote delivered by the state president, David Xu. Then, during the awards ceremony, the best competitors were recognized for their achievements in testing and presentation as well as their overall performance. The Top 8 finalists received certificates of achievement, and the Top 3 performers were awarded with small glass plaques. The 2018 AV MiniCon was a huge success, and Amador Valley DECA hopes to continues its successful and engaging tradition of mini-conferences to inspire students to become future business leaders.

Dougherty Valley DECA Celebrates a Successful NorCal

Dougherty Valley DECA was among the largest chapters at the 2018 Northern California Career Development Conference, with 79 competitors, and its formidable size was matched by its competitive success. DVHS DECA members’ names were called 79 times during awards, with 29 members placing Top 8 in their events and 23 placing Top 3. Almost every chapter member was called up to stage at least once, making this conference Dougherty Valley’s most successful NorCal CDC by far.
Officers and members attribute this success to the new online competition prep system established this year. Online resources and homework assignments greatly helped members study for their events independently, and this allowed officers to focus on honing members’ speaking skills during after-school meetings. DVHS DECA Vice President of Competitions, Ivy Lin, commented, “I’m really glad that our members have found the new online resources useful; we’ll definitely continue using them in the future. Also, a big shoutout to all the competitive events officers who came up with and implemented this new system!”
